What are Rubber Tiles?

What are rubber tiles

Rubber tiles, also known as rubber tiles or rubber sheets, are a type of flooring used to protect the floor of various spaces.

Although they are mainly used in sports environments, such as gyms, basketball courts, etc., today their use has become popular in other types of spaces, becoming an excellent alternative to cover and protect floors in other places, such as children’s areas, in the domestic environment in garages, even in gardens in outdoor areas of homes.

Rubber tiles are rubber flooring with excellent flexibility, cushioning and shock absorption characteristics, anti-slip properties and high soundproofing capacity.

All these properties make rubber tiles suitable for indoor and outdoor spaces, and for multiple activities and uses.

Advantages of Rubber Tiles

Rubber tiles offer many advantages:

  • Great floor protection. These pavements protect the floor very well from impacts and are capable of supporting more or less heavy weights depending on their thickness and density.
  • High anti-slip capacity. The fine-grained surface provides excellent grip when walking, preventing slips and falls.
  • High resistance to water. The rubber with which the tiles are made is water repellent, so they do not absorb water or deform under the effect of humidity.
  • High resistance to UV radiation. Rubber tiles resist very well the effect of UV rays without degrading, so they are an excellent alternative in outdoor spaces.
  • Great capacity to reduce vibration and noise. The characteristics of the rubber and the high density of the tiles make them a floor that reduces vibration and dampens noise very well.
  • Excellent recovery capacity. The characteristics of the rubber prevent traces of marks left by the weight, recovering its original shape. In this sense, the higher the density of the rubber tile, the greater its recovery capacity.
  • Fire retardant properties. The good fireproof properties of rubber tiles make them a very safe floor (prevents the spread of fire).
  • Great versatility. These floors can be installed both outdoors and indoors, and are suitable for sports areas, domestic spaces, children’s areas, etc.
  • Ease of installation. The tiles can be installed directly on the floor without the need for adhesives, as they rest under their own weight. If it is necessary to cut to make any adjustments, we can use a cutter. In case a better fixation to the floor is necessary, some adhesive glue can be used.
  • Easy care and maintenance. These floors require very little care to keep them in good condition. That is why they are inexpensive and time-saving to maintain.
  • Very affordable price. Rubber tiles are a pavement with a very economical price, making it one of the preferred options for gyms and sports spaces.
  • Suitable for children and pets. They are pavements that do not contain toxic elements in its elaboration, being safe for children from 3 years old and pets.
  • Great comfort and safety. These floors provide great comfort and stability, so they are also used in spaces where the type of work requires standing for long hours, such as hospitals, health centers, clinics, etc.
  • Easy cleaning. The cleaning of these floors is not complicated. The use of neutral soaps and a well wrung mop is recommended.

Rubber Tile Uses

These pavements have a great versatility, which makes them optimal for use in different environments and spaces, both indoors and outdoors.

Some of the most common uses of rubber tiles are:

Sports Space

Rubber tiles are perfect for various sports venues:

  • Weight zones in gyms, where you work with barbells and discs, dumbbells or weight benches.
  • Machine areas in gyms, such as weight training areas, cardio areas, etc.
  • Areas for floor and functional exercises, such as sit-ups, squats, stretching, etc.
  • Crossfit training areas.
  • Weightlifting training areas.
  • Climbing walls.

Health Space

They are floorings that provide a great deal of comfort in healthcare spaces where it is common to stand for long periods of time:

  • Hospitals and clinics.
  • Health centers.
  • Physical therapy centers.

Children's Space

Rubber tiles are also a good alternative for children’s playgrounds in the following areas:

  • Children’s areas.
  • kindergartens.
  • Schools and nursery schools.

Domestic Space

These pavements are also used to cover different areas in the domestic environment:

  • Garage areas and basements.
  • Outdoor areas in gardens.

Commercial Space

They are also pavements that can be used to cover commercial spaces such as:

  • Stores and offices.
  • Warehouses.

Rubber Tile Thickness Selection

Thickness of rubber tiles

As we mentioned before, when buying rubber tiles, we must choose the appropriate thickness for the type of use we are going to give it. In this way we will achieve a functional floor adapted to our needs.

At Jowy we recommend you to choose the thickness according to these criteria:

Rubber Tile 1.5cm

They are the finest option. These tiles offer good floor protection, but are more limited to spaces that do not have to support very high loads.

Jowy’s specialist recommends. We recommend the 15 mm thickness for exercise areas in gyms with weights and low weight dumbbells. Also for cardio and weight training machine areas.

2 and 2,5cm Rubber Tile

Both thicknesses are suitable for floor coverings in spaces of moderate intensity or demand.

Jowy’s specialist recommends. The 20 and 25 mm rubber tiles are a good choice for crossfit training areas, children’s playgrounds, schools, kindergartens, etc.

Rubber Tile 4cm

In general, thicker thicknesses are more suitable when the floor is expected to support very high weights (this is the case of exercise rooms for sports such as weightlifting, where maximum loads are worked with). In these cases, a thicker and denser rubber tile is required to protect the floor.

Jowy’s specialist recommends. 40 mm rubber tiles are the ones we would recommend to provide maximum floor protection in weightlifting and climbing walls.

Density and Hardness of Rubber Sheets

The density of a rubber tile determines its firmness, hardness and stability. In this way, tiles with high densities are much more stable floors where a better balance and greater cushioning is achieved.

Density is a measure of kg/m3 and expresses how dense and compacted the rubber is. The more compacted it is, the higher its density.

Higher density floors are associated with higher quality rubber tiles. In addition, a higher density means a less porous floor, which accumulates less dirt and is easier to clean.

The hardness of a rubber tile is directly related to its density. Thus, the higher the density, the higher the hardness.

Rubber Tile Dimensions

The rubber sheets presented in tile format can have different dimensions. In Jowy we offer two formats:

  • Model of 50×50 cm. It is a lighter tile and easier to handle and assemble.
  • Model of 100×100 cm. As they are 1 meter long, they are larger tiles and, due to their own weight, they are fixed and settle better on the floor.

Material of the Rubber Tiles

Material of rubber tiles

The rubber used in the production of the tiles comes from natural rubber.

It is a material that has excellent qualities and provides the advantages mentioned above:

Rubber Benefits

  • Good UV and water resistance.
  • Good anti-vibration and shock absorption capacity.
  • Good anti-slip characteristics.
  • Good elastic memory.
  • Soft and comfortable feel.
  • High dimensional stability.
  • High flexibility and elasticity.

Rubber Sheet Granule

Rubber Sheet Granule

Rubber tiles can come in either coarse or fine granules. This granule is mixed with other components to create each tile.

At Jowy we recommend the finer granules as they offer a greater resistance of the tile, extending its durability and reducing the possibility of crumbling over time.

Rubber Tile Assembly

The installation of this type of tiles is not complicated. Depending on the surface on which we are going to install them, the procedure may vary slightly.

Generally speaking, installation differs depending on whether it is on a hard surface or on the ground:

Hard surfaces: ceramic tile, marble, flooring, etc.

In these cases, the tiles can be installed without adhesives, due to their high density and weight. If we want to cut any edge to adjust, we can use a cutter.

When we want a better grip to the floor, we can use adhesive to glue each tile to the floor and to glue the sides, so that the tiles will be glued to each other.

Normally, when the tile is placed under machines or other elements, the weight of these will facilitate a better seating of the tile on the floor without the need for adhesives.

Soil: outdoor, gardens, etc.

On the soil, the rubber tiles settle and remain fixed, due to their own weight and adherence. It is necessary that the soil is well compacted, to prevent them from moving or shifting.

Glue can be used on the sides to fix the joints between tiles if a stronger connection between pieces is desired.

Rubber Tile Colors

The colors that we can find in rubber tiles can be varied, although the most common are black and gray, because they adapt to all types of decorations.

If you need a special color and you do not find it in our catalog, please contact our sales department to know the possibilities we can offer you.

Price of Rubber Tiles

The price of a rubber tile is mainly determined by the following aspects:

  • Thickness. The greater the thickness, the higher the price.
  • Density. The higher the density, the higher the price
  • Material. The rubber used in the manufacture of the tiles can be of better or lower quality. The higher the quality, the higher the price.
  • Brand and manufacturer. Not all brands and manufacturers offer the same price for a product with similar characteristics.

In Jowy we have a catalog of rubber tiles that we are renewing and expanding to meet the demand of our customers. We offer you a quality product in different thicknesses with the best value for money in the market.

Frequently Asked Questions about Rubber Tiles

Discover some of the most frequently asked questions customers ask us before buying rubber tiles:

How many years do rubber tiles last?

It depends on the quality of the material used. Our rubber tiles use top quality rubber and have a durability of 8-10 years, provided they are used according to the recommended use.

Where to buy Rubber Tiles?

In Jowy we offer you different options in rubber tiles so you can choose the one that best suits you and buy in our online store. We are constantly renewing our products to expand our catalog according to market needs.

Is it necessary to glue the Rubber Tile to the floor?

Our rubber tiles are of high density and high weight, so they are self-supporting and do not move, without the use of glue or adhesives. However, if we want a better grip, adhesive or double-sided tape can be used to fix each tile to the floor.

And is it necessary to glue them together?

No, it is not necessary. The rubber tiles have straight edges, and when placed side by side, there is no space between them, so it would not really be necessary to glue them together.

Can Rubber Tiles be installed outdoors?

Yes, some models of rubber tiles are specially prepared for outdoor use, with channels on the back that allow good water drainage, preventing water from accumulating on the surface and creating puddles.
