What are Rubber Floors?

What are Rubber Floors

Rubber flooring is a flooring made of natural rubber whose main function is to protect the floor on which it is installed.

These pavements are usually used in sports facilities, but they are also used in domestic and commercial environments. Their popularization has been possible thanks to their excellent properties and affordable price.

We can find rubber flooring in different thicknesses and formats. Each type is designed to adapt to a specific level of use. The right choice according to the use we are going to give is the best way to achieve maximum performance and durability.

The two main types of rubber flooring that we can find in the market are in tile format and in roll format. Each of these formats has specific peculiarities that make it suitable for certain uses.

Advantages of Rubber Flooring

As mentioned above, there are many benefits offered by rubber flooring:

  • Floor protection. The main function of the rubber floor is to serve as a protective element for the floor, thus preventing it from being damaged by falling objects, blows, etc.
  • Anti-slip capacity. Rubber floors are manufactured in such a way that the surface layer on which we step has high anti-slip properties, being a very safe pavement.
  • Water resistance. These pavements are resistant to humidity, impermeable to water and do not deform when in contact with it.
  • Resistance to UV radiation. Its resistance to UV rays prevents the material from deteriorating, making it more durable compared to other floors.
  • Damping capacity. Rubber floorings have a high shock absorbing capacity, effectively absorbing impact and preventing vibration.
  • Soundproofing capacity. These are floors that, due to their high density and low porosity, dampen sound very well, providing great acoustic comfort.
  • Resilience. These floorings recover their original shape thanks to their great flexibility and elastic memory. The higher the density and thickness of the floor, the higher the level of recovery.
  • Fireproof capacity. The rubber with which these pavements are made is a material with fireproof properties, so rubber floors do not ignite easily.
  • Adaptability to different uses. These floors can be installed in different spaces. From sports spaces, to domestic spaces, health centers or commercial spaces.
  • Ease of assembly. Rubber flooring can be easily mounted on the flooring of your choice, without the need to use many tools.
  • Easy care and maintenance. These pavements are easy to clean and do not require great care.
  • Very economical price. Rubber floorings have a very affordable price compared to other floorings, that’s why they are widely used in gyms.
  • Suitable for children and pets. They are suitable for use in children over 3 years old and pets, as they do not contain toxic components.
  • Comfort and safety. Rubber floors provide great comfort when walking on them. That is why they are widely used in spaces where there is a high level of traffic.

Choosing the Thickness of a Rubber Floor

Rubber Pavement Thickness

The first aspect that we must decide when we are going to buy a rubber floor is its thickness. This choice will be determined by the type of use we are going to give it.

At Jowy we recommend that you choose the thickness based on these criteria:

Soil Rubber less than 1cm

Rubber floorings with less thickness, those of less than 1 cm (less than 10 mm) are the thinnest, and the ones that protect the floor the least. Consequently, the use we should give them is to cover passageways. As they are so thin, they are usually presented in roll format.

Jowy’s specialist recommends. Rubber flooring with a thickness of less than 10 mm is what we usually recommend to cover the hallway and changing rooms in a gymnasium. It is also used to cover rooms in the home such as basements or garages. As they are thinner floors, they do not withstand the fall of weights and impacts, so they would not be advisable for crossfit type activities, where weights are usually thrown to the floor.

Rubber floor 1 to 2cm

These floors are somewhat thicker than the previous ones. They protect the floor better and can support some weights. As they are thicker, they are presented in tile format.

Jowy’s specialist recommends. These floors are perfect for gymnasiums in weight rooms, functional exercises, relaxation, etc.

2 to 3cm rubber flooring

These thicknesses are adapted to more demanding spaces, where the floor must support higher loads.

Jowy’s specialist recommends. They are a good choice for crossfit training spaces, children’s playgrounds, schools, kindergartens, etc. For outdoor use, they are suitable for children’s playgrounds or outdoor weight training areas.

Rubber Floor 4cm

These rubber floor coverings are the thickest. They offer optimum floor protection under the most demanding conditions.

Jowy’s specialist recommends. These are the ones we recommend for weightlifting rooms, climbing walls and rooms for lifting heavy weights, where it is common for the floor to receive strong impacts due to very high loads.

Characteristics of Rubber Flooring

The main characteristics of a rubber pavement are:

  • Material. The material used to manufacture these floors is natural rubber.
  • Format. These pavements are mainly presented in two formats: tile or slab and roll. The choice of one format or the other will depend on the type of use we are going to give it.
  • Thickness. Rubber flooring comes in different thicknesses. Each thickness is adapted to a type of use.
  • Density. The density of a rubber pavement, measured in kg/m3, determines its firmness, hardness and stability. The higher the density, the greater the hardness.
  • Granule. The granule of a rubber floor can be either fine or coarse. Finer granules create floors that crumble less and are more durable.
  • Colors. Rubber flooring is usually produced in colors such as gray, black or brown. In roll models, the color comes in speckles.

In addition to these essential aspects to take into account when buying a rubber flooring, there are other variables such as dimensions and size that can allow us to choose a more customized floor.

Rubber Flooring Price

When we value the price of a rubber floor, we must take into account that the aspects that influence are:

  • Thickness. The greater the thickness, the higher the price.
  • Density. The higher the density, the higher the price
  • Format. Depending on whether it is tile or roll, the price also varies.
  • Brand and manufacturer. Not all brands and manufacturers offer the same price for a product with similar characteristics.

In order to meet the demand of our customers, Jowy is constantly renewing our rubber flooring catalog.
